The city is situated at the confluence of two major rivers Sava and Danube. Its one of the oldest cities in Europe with the population of 1.7 milion, which makes Belgrade the second largest city in the Balkans after Athens. The name "White City" was given when Slavs settled in this area, and it refers to a big rock that dominated over the confluence, where today stands the medieval fortress of Kalemegdan.
